Śrī Jagannātha Pañcakam (Nīlācala-nātha Stotra)

Five Verses to the Lord of the Blue Hill

Traditional, unknown author (Vaishnava devotional literature)

5 verses

This five-verse hymn directly addresses Jagannath by the epithet 'Nīlādrinātha' / 'Nīlācalanātha' — 'Lord of the Blue Hill' (Nīlācala/Nīlādri being the sacred hill on which the Puri temple stands) — making it the strongest verified match for the requested 'Nīlācala-nātha Stotra.' It is cross-referenced with the shorter two-verse Jagannātha Praṇāma, which uses the same epithet ('nīlācala-nivāsāya... jagannāthāya te namaḥ'). Devotees recite such verses during daily temple worship and darshan, invoking the Lord specifically in His aspect as resident of the sacred hill.

1
raktāmbhoruha-darpa-bhañjana-mahā-saundarya-netra-dvayaṃ vande śrī-puruṣottamaṃ prati-dinaṃ nīlādri-cūḍāmaṇim॥1॥
His two beautiful eyes are lovelier than the reddest lotus flower! Every single day, I bow to Purushottama, the shining jewel on top of the blue hill.
2
nīlādrinātha bhaje bhaje bhaje nīlādrināthaṃ bhaje. dāru-brahmamayaṃ parāt-parataraṃ vande jagan-nāyakam॥2॥
I worship the Lord of the blue hill, again and again! He is the highest of the high, living inside sacred wood, and I bow to him as the leader of the whole world.
3
vande śrī-puruṣottamaṃ prati-dinaṃ nīlādri-cūḍāmaṇim॥3॥
Every day, I bow to holy Purushottama, the crown jewel of the blue hill.
4
bhadrāyā vāma-bhāge ratha-caraṇa-yutaṃ brahma-rudrendra-vandyaṃ brahma-dāruṃ smarāmi॥4॥
On the left side of his sister Subhadra, riding his own chariot — I remember the sacred wood-body of Jagannath, worshipped even by Brahma, Shiva, and Indra.
5
nīlādrināthaṃ bhaje bhaje nīlādrināthaṃ bhaje. iti śrī jagannātha pañcakaṃ sampūrṇam॥5॥
I worship the Lord of the blue hill, again and again! And so ends this song of five verses to Jagannath.

Śrī Jagannātha Praṇāmaḥ / Śrī Jagannātha Prārthanā

Salutation and Prayer to Lord Jagannath

Traditional, unknown author (classical Vaishnava stotra collection)

6 verses

This entry combines the short two-verse Jagannātha Praṇāma (a direct namaskāra/salutation, verses 1-2) with four of the five verses of the companion Jagannātha Prārthanā (a prayer of surrender, verses 3-6) from the same classical source page. Together they form the kind of brief salutary hymn traditionally recited by devotees at the start of worship or darshan, expressing surrender and invoking the Lord's protection by recalling His mercy toward Draupadi and Gajendra. NOTE: the exact standalone title 'Jagannātha-namaskāra Stotra' (as a fixed 5-verse text) was not located in public sources; this combined Praṇāma+Prārthanā selection is the closest verified equivalent.

1
nīlācala-nivāsāya nityāya paramātmane. balabhadra-subhadrābhyāṃ jagannāthāya te namaḥ॥1॥
I bow to you, Jagannath! You live forever on the blue hill, together with your brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra.
2
jagad-ānanda-kandāya praṇatārta-harāya ca. nīlācala-nivāsāya jagannāthāya te namaḥ॥2॥
I bow to you, Jagannath! You are the root of all the world's happiness, and you take away the sadness of everyone who bows to you.
3
ratnākaras tava gṛhaṃ gṛhiṇī ca padmā kiṃ deyam asti bhavate puruṣottamāya. dattaṃ mano yadupate tvaritaṃ gṛhāṇa॥3॥
The ocean full of jewels is your home, and Lakshmi herself is your wife — what could I possibly give you, Purushottama? All I have is my heart; please accept it quickly!
4
anāthasya jagannātha nāthas tvaṃ me na saṃśayaḥ. yasya nātho jagannāthas tasya duḥkhaṃ kathaṃ prabho॥4॥
I have no one else, Jagannath, but you are surely my protector. If Jagannath is watching over someone, how can they ever really be sad?
5
yā tvarā draupadī-trāṇe yā tvarā gaja-mokṣaṇe. mayy ārte karuṇā-mūrte sā tvarā kva gatā hare॥5॥
You rushed so quickly to save Draupadi, and you rushed to save the elephant Gajendra. So kind Lord, where has that same speed gone now that I am in trouble?
6
mat-samo pātakī nāsti tvat-samo nāsti pāpahā. iti vijñāya deveśa yathāyogyaṃ tathā kuru॥6॥
There is no sinner quite like me, and no forgiver quite like you! Knowing this, dear Lord of the gods, please do whatever is right for me.

Mārkaṇḍeya-maharṣi-kṛtaṃ Jagannātha Stotram (Puruṣottama Stotra)

Sage Markandeya's Hymn to Jagannath as Purushottama

Traditionally attributed to Sage Markandeya

5 verses

This hymn is attributed to Sage Markandeya and is preserved in Puranic literature (documented on sanskritdocuments.org with a Brahma Purana chapter reference, Adhyaya 55). While the research brief specified a Skanda Purana origin, cross-referencing found this Markandeya stotra sourced to the Brahma Purana; it is presented here as the closest verified match because it repeatedly and explicitly invokes Jagannath by the name 'Puruṣottama' ('Supreme Person'), the exact theme requested. This discrepancy in Puranic source attribution should be noted for any reader requiring strict Skanda Purana provenance.

Save me, Purushottama! Save me, ocean of kindness! Save me from the burning troubles of this world. Save me, for I've come to you for shelter.

Brahmakṛtaṃ Jagannātha Stotram

Brahma's Hymn to Jagannath (Ratha Yātrā Stuti, Skanda Purana)

Traditionally attributed to Lord Brahma, recorded in the Skanda Purana

3 verses

These three verses are excerpted from the Skanda Purana (Vaishnava Khanda, Purushottama Khanda, Chapter 27, verses 86-88), where Brahma himself is depicted praising Jagannath. Because this is a short passage rather than a full independent 'Ratha Yātrā Stuti,' it is presented here as the closest verified Skanda Purana hymn to Jagannath connected with the Purushottama Kshetra Mahatmya tradition that underlies Ratha Yatra devotional literature. It is traditionally recited by pilgrims seeking Jagannath's blessing and is associated with the broader Purushottama-kshetra praise literature recited around the Ratha Yatra season.

1
jaya kṛṣṇa jagannātha jaya sarvāghanāśana. jaya līlā-śarīrātman jaya vāñchā-phalaprada॥
All glory to you, Krishna, Lord of the world! You wash away every wrongdoing. Your body is made of joyful play, and you grant every good wish we make.
2

Glory to the ruler over all rulers, who ends every kind of suffering! With these words, Grandfather Brahma, the maker of the worlds, praised Lord Jagannath.

Daśāvatāra Stotram

Hymn to the Ten Incarnations

Jayadeva Gosvami (12th century Odisha), from Gīta-Govinda

8 verses

Composed by Jayadeva Gosvami in 12th-century Odisha as the opening ashtapadi of the Gīta-Govinda. This hymn celebrates the ten incarnations of Vishnu (Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Balarama, Buddha, Kalki). Traditionally sung every evening at the Jagannath temple in Puri. Includes verses 1-8 here; the original contains 11 verses culminating in an offering to Krishna.

Chaturbhuja Jagannātha Āratī

The Four-Armed Jagannath Arati (Puri Temple daily worship hymn)

Traditional, unknown author (temple liturgical tradition)

4 verses

This arati hymn is recited during the daily ritual worship (nitis) of Lord Jagannath at the Puri temple, where the presiding deity is ceremonially honored multiple times each day — beginning with Mangala Ārati at approximately 5 a.m., followed by further ritual offerings through Sandhya Ārati at sunset. Its archaic, Sanskrit-heavy style situates it within the older temple-liturgy tradition (as opposed to more recently composed Hindi devotional versions of the arati that also circulate today, such as 'Jai Jagannath Swami' and 'Aarti Shri Jagannath Mangal Kaari'). The 'four-armed' (chaturbhuja) description reflects the deity's identification with Vishnu-Narayana in classical iconographic terms, even though the actual temple image of Jagannath is aniconic/stylized. NOTE: due to variation and incomplete standardization across devotional websites, the verse count and exact line order for this arati differ slightly between sources; the four verses given here represent the portion consistently attested across multiple sources.

1
catur-bhuja jagannātha kaṇṭha śobhita kaustubhaḥ. padmanābha veda-garbha candra sūryā vilocanaḥ.
Four-armed Jagannath wears a beautiful jewel around his neck. A lotus grows from his navel, holy scriptures live inside him, and the sun and moon are like his two eyes!
2
jagannātha loka-nātha nīlādriḥ so pāro hari. jagannātha mahānātha śaraṇaṃ māṃ kuru sadā.
Jagannath, the whole world's protector, lives on the blue hill as Lord Hari. O great Lord Jagannath, please always keep me safe under your care.
3
balabhadra subhadrā sahita jagannātha virājate. ratna-siṃhāsanārūḍho bhaktānāṃ vāñchita-pradaḥ.
Jagannath sits together with brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra on a jeweled throne, giving his devotees whatever they truly wish for.
4
āratī jagannāthasya kurve bhaktyā dine dine. sarva-pāpa-vinirmukto viṣṇu-lokaṃ sa gacchati.
Every single day, with love, I wave the lamp of arati to Jagannath. Whoever does this is freed from every wrong and travels on to Lord Vishnu's heavenly home.

Āhe Nīla Śaila

O Lord of the Blue Mountain

Bhakta Salabega (c. 1607-1675), Odia saint-poet

9 verses

The most beloved Odia devotional song about Lord Jagannath, composed by Bhakta Salabega — a 17th-century poet of Muslim (Yavana) birth who became one of the greatest devotees of Jagannath. Legend tells that the Rath Yatra chariot stopped and would not move until Salabega arrived; the spot is still marked at Puri. This song remains the anthem of Odia devotion, sung especially during Rath Yatra.

1
āhe nīla śaila prabala matta bāraṇa,

Dear Lord of the Blue Mountain, You are like a mighty, strong elephant. My worries are like a lotus pond — please trample them and set me free.

When the elephant king Gajendra called out to You from the deep water, caught by a crocodile, You sent Your disc and saved him. Please save me like that too.
3

When Draupadi called out to You in the Kuru court, You gave her endless cloth and saved her honor in front of the whole court. Please save me like that too.
4

ghora bane mṛguṇiku paḍithilā kaṣaṇa,

When a poor deer suffered great pain in the dark forest, You saved her from terrible danger. Please save me like that too.
5
rāvaṇara bhāi bibhīṣaṇa galā śaraṇa,

When Ravana's brother Vibhishana came to You for shelter, You gave him refuge and made him the king of Lanka. Please give me shelter too.
6

When the great sinner Ajamila called out Your name at the moment of death, You took him to Vaikuntha. Please save me too.
7

prahallāda pitā se ye baḍa duṣṭa dāruṇa,

Prahlada's father was cruel and terrible. You burst out of a pillar and tore him apart at once. Please protect me too.
8
nīḷācaḷe bije kari bauddha abatāreṇa,
beni bhuja ṭeki prabhu yācuacha śaraṇa.
You have chosen Nilachala (Puri) as Your home, standing there as the Buddha incarnation, arms raised, offering shelter to everyone.
9
kahe sālabega hīna jātire muṁ yabana,
śrīraṅgā caraṇa taḷe karuchi muṁ jaṇāṇa.
Says lowly Salabega — I am a Yavana, born outside Your faith. But I lay this prayer at Your beautiful feet: please save me.

Brahmāṇḍa Bhūgoḷa — Jagannātha Vandanā (substitute for 'Bhava Sāgara Tāraṇa')

Invocation to Jagannath from Balaram Das's Cosmological Text

Balarām Dāsa (Odia Panchasakha poet-saint, 15th-16th century)

2 verses

Balaram Das was one of the five Panchasakha ('five friends') Odia Vaishnava poet-saints of the 15th-16th century, remembered for works including the Jagamohana Ramayana (Dandi Ramayana), Lakshmi Purana, and cosmological/philosophical texts. CAUTION: the specific title 'Bhava Sāgara Tāraṇa' requested could not be verified as an authentic Balaram Das composition — a Sanskrit hymn of similar-sounding title ('Bhava-Sāgara Tāraṇa Kāraṇa He') was found online, but it is addressed to a generic spiritual teacher ('Gurudeva'), not to Jagannath, and carries no reliable attribution to Balaram Das; it has been excluded to avoid misattribution. Instead, this entry presents a short, verified two-line Jagannath invocation from Balaram Das's cosmological work 'Brahmāṇḍa Bhūgoḷa,' preserved in an Odia Wikisource manuscript scan, as an authentic (if brief) substitute showing his genuine devotional voice addressing Jagannath directly.

O God of gods, Jagannath! You love your devotees so dearly, dear Gopinath.
2

teṇu śaraṇa baḷarāma. dia, he prabhu dibya jñāna.
So Balaram comes to you for shelter. Please give him your divine wisdom, dear Lord.

Śūnya Saṃhitā (selected verses)

Selected Verses from the Book of the Void

Achyutānanda Dāsa (Odia Panchasakha mystic-poet, 16th century)

3 verses

Achyutananda Dasa was one of the Panchasakha Odia mystic poet-saints of the 16th century, whose Śūnya Saṃhitā ('Compendium of the Void') is a major work of esoteric Odia Vaishnava philosophy exploring 'Śūnya Brahman' (the Void-Absolute) as a name for the ultimate reality manifest in Jagannath, understood in Panchasakha theology as identical with the formless-yet-embodied wooden deity at Puri. Only a small number of individual couplets from this lengthy philosophical text could be verified through secondary academic/reference sources; this is presented as a limited but authentic selection rather than a complete or continuous excerpt. A 1992 Odia-language compiled edition exists on archive.org but was not directly excerpted for this research due to time constraints — readers seeking a fuller selection should consult it directly.

nāhi tāhāra rūpa varṇa, adṛśya avarṇa tā cinha. tāhāku brahma boli kahi, śūnya brahmati se bolāi.
That great mystery has no shape and no color — you can't even see it! Wise people call it Brahman, but they also call it 'the Empty One' — Shunya Brahma.

The Void has its own form and its own way of thinking, brave one. From within that Void, look — you can see this whole moving, living world!

A bird flies using both its wings together; our eyes let us play in this world using both together too. Missing just one wing makes you unable to fly; missing both eyes makes you blind. That's how the formless (nirguna) and the form-having (saguna) sides of God work together.
